History

The Rising Star Church of God in Christ was founded in 1970 by Elder Robert Lee and Mother Johnie Mae Macklin, inspired by their faith and dedication to building a ministry rooted in love. Pastor Macklin, called to the ministry under Bishop S.D. Lee, Sr., organized the church with eight charter members, holding the first service on October 25, 1970, at 2616 Bishop Street, later known as “The Little Rising Star.”

Through extraordinary faith, Pastor Macklin used his daughter Robin’s college fund to purchase the first church, repaying it within two years as the church thrived. By the first anniversary, the growing membership raised $2,000, and the need for a larger space soon arose. Guided by faith and effort, Pastor Macklin identified and secured a new building with the members’ support, raising funds for a down payment by contributing $3 per month. On March 3, 1974, the church moved into its current location, paying off a 30-year mortgage in just seven years.

Under Pastor Macklin’s leadership, the church underwent significant upgrades, including bricking the exterior, elevating the roof, adding an educational wing, and purchasing vans to support ministry needs. The church also benefited from generous donations, such as a fully loaded van gifted by Mrs. Mary Johnson.

After the passing of Pastor Macklin and Mother Macklin, leadership transitioned to Supt. Charles Barrett and Missionary Ida Barrett. They continued the legacy by beautifying and improving the church, including refurbishing the pulpit area, upgrading restrooms, and carpeting the educational wing. Their dedicated leadership spanned 18 years until Pastor Barrett’s passing.

Today, the church is led by Elder Leonard D. Collins, Sr., and Lady Debra Day Collins, the third leadership succession. They continue to build upon the foundation of faith, love, and dedication, with the unwavering support of the congregation. The Rising Star Church of God in Christ remains a testament to God’s favor and the enduring legacy of its visionary founders and leaders.
